What is Apeing in?
Buying a position quickly without much due diligence — usually because of social momentum or fear of missing the move. "Aped 5 ETH into the new token" means "bought without thinking it through."

Where the term comes from
Crypto Twitter caught the term from the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT mania of 2021, but the verb existed before BAYC — "to ape" had been used loosely to mean "buy aggressively without thinking." The Bored Ape branding cemented the connection.
"Aped in" is past-tense; "apeing" is the present action. Often paired with the amount: "I aped 1 ETH into this," "aped my whole memecoin allocation."
Example
A typical aped-in story arc:
- 11 PM: Twitter timeline lights up about a new memecoin
- 11:15 PM: friend messages "you in?" with a buy link
- 11:18 PM: aped in 0.5 ETH at $0.0001 per token
- 1 AM: token at $0.00025 — up 2.5× — euphoria
- 8 AM next day: token at $0.00008, down ~50% from highs
- 2 PM: post on Twitter — "should've taken profits"
The defining feature isn't the buy itself, it's the speed and lack of research. Apeing is about not having time/desire to verify the contract, check holder distribution, or read the whitepaper.
Why it matters
The term acknowledges that the behavior is suboptimal — that's the entire joke. Aping in is what you do when you're choosing thrill over discipline. The honest framing:
- Sometimes it works. Early-mover advantage is real for certain memecoin launches and DEX listings.
- It's negative-EV at scale. Across many apes, most lose money relative to what disciplined entries would have produced.
- Position sizing is the only protection. "Aped in" with 5% of crypto holdings is a bad-but-survivable habit; "aped in" with 50% is a portfolio-ending decision waiting to happen.
If you find yourself apeing into trades regularly, the question isn't whether the next one will work. It's whether the cumulative behavior across the year is profitable. Tracking trade-by-trade PnL (most trade-tracker apps do this automatically) is the honest mirror.
